The 7th Girls Day School Trust Chess Championships took place at Sydenham High School.
10 GDST Schools took part in this event. Howells School, Llandaff entered this tournament for the first time and were represented by 6 girls:
Venetia Sivarasingham and Emily Wang (U8)
Jessie Jukes and Shyanna Sivarasingham (U10)
Tahlia Morgan Rose and Alyssa Wang (U12).
There were 6 rounds in total. 3 points were awarded for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss.
Some great chess was played by all with some very close games, especially given that some of the girls were playing a year under age.
Alyssa Wang won the U12 with 16/18 points.
Shyanna Sivarasinghamcame 2nd in the U10 with 16/18 points.
Venetia Sivarasingham and Emily Wang came 2nd in the U8 with 14/18 points.
The top three scores were added together to decide the winners of the Schools' Cup.
Howell's came 3rd overall with 46 points but it was a closest finish ever in the history of the tournament with Wimbledon High School finishing 2nd on 47 points and Norwich High School being crowned winners with 48 points.
This was a great achievement for the girls in their first ever GDST tournament and it was another fantastic event organised by Claire Summerscale.
