42 players took part in the first Welsh Blitz Championship at Pencoed Miners Welfare Hall. An enjoyable afternoon of playing speed chess (3 mins plus 2 seconds added per move) with 11 rounds completed in just under 3 hours!
The event was won by Grandmaster Matthew Turner, 2nd and Welsh Champion - Bill Hewitt, Joint 3rd Joe Fathallah, Tim Kett, David Sands and Calum Harris who won the Under 1800 rating prize. The Under 1500 rating prize was won by Russell Dodington with Hugo Fowler winning the Junior prize.
It is hoped to arrange another Blitz event in September - watch for details.
Congratulations to Tim Kett, winner of the 2016 Welsh Championships, with a score of 6/7. This is Tim’s third title, having won it outright in 2014 and sharing the title with Richard Jones in 2012. Congratulations also to Julie Van Kemenade, winner of the Welsh Ladies Championship with a score of 3/7.
Taking second place in the Championships was FM Sven Zeidler, and five players shared third: Thomas Brown, Juan Talavera Rodriguez, David Jameson, Peter Eshander, and Ben Thomas.
The highest score in the Championships section decided the winners of the under 21 and under 18s title for 2016. Ben Thomas netted both, with a score of 4.5/7. Sharing the under 16 title, with scores of 4/7 in the Open were Venetia Sivarajasingam, Shayanna Sivarajasingam and Imogen Camp.
The 2015 Tom Weston Open/Major Championship was won by GM Matthew Turner, who scored a perfect 7/7. As he is not Welsh-qualified, the Tom Weston shield is won by the highest placed Welsh qualified player. This year's award goes to Charles Summers, who scored 5/7, finishing in joint second place with Dominic Gibbs. Grading prizes were won by Paul Bridges, Guy Wagner, Sam Jukes, Roy Thomas, Shayanna Sivarajasingam, Venetia Sivarajasingam and Bill Hunt
In the John Bishop Memorial Championship, the winner was Jake Hurley (6/7). Mohamed Binesmael (5.5/7) came second and Richard Livermore (5/7) third. The grading prize was won by Stephen Bonutto.
