Wrexham Chess Club’s two teams have both made good starts to the beginning of the year. In division 1 Wrexham I crushed Chester III by 3½ to 1½ and a surprise defeat of Chester I by Chester II on the same evening means the Wrexham team are now top of the division; equal on points with Chester I but with a better individual game score and a match in hand. Colwyn Bay is close behind in third place.
A delighted Wrexham Chess Club President, Mike Hughes, commented, “The result of the match between Chester I and Chester II was a real surprise! This result, coupled with our own victory over Chester III, means that, at the halfway point of the season, Wrexham are well placed and a close contest for the championship is in prospect.”
Meanwhile in Division 2 Wrexham II have overtaken Frodsham and moved up into second place in the league with an impressive 3-2 victory over Holywell. Team captain Peter Fisher said “Unfortunately our shaky start to the season has left us 2 points behind the league leaders Chester IV; however, we have now had four victories in a row, including victory over the leaders, so we are confident that we will be able to turn that deficit around.”
Wrexham Chess Club meets every Tuesday evening in the Memorial Hall, Gresford. For further information contact Mike Hughes on 01978 854676 or email@example.com.
