Wrexham Club News - Mike Evans Memorial Tournament

Mike Evans Memorial Tournament 2012

The annual Mike Evans Tournament took place on Sunday 28th October at the New Memorial Hall Gresford.  Twenty-five players took part, from Wrexham, Chester, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and the Wirral.

The winner was David Jameson of Colwyn Bay who edged out Bob Clark of Penyffordd on tiebreak after both had scored 4½/5.  This was the fifth time David Jameson had won the tournament.

Steve Lloyd (Chester) and Richard Burton (Colwyn Bay) shared third place on 4/5.  The Grading Prize for players graded under 135 was a three-way tie between Peter Fisher (Wrexham), Max Coventry (Holywell) and Denis Harvey (Rhyl) on 3/5.

Three junior players, Joshua Williams (Glyn Ceiriog) and Catherine and Daniel Savidge (Chester) put up good performances in their first senior tournament, each scoring 2/5.

Wrexham Chess Club President, Mike Hughes, commented, “This is the eleventh year that we have held this tournament so it has become a well established feature of the local chess scene.  This year’s event was particularly closely fought and once again I congratulate David Jameson on his success.”
