On Monday the 8th October 2012 West Wales’ newest International Chess Master Richard S Jones will be playing in excess of 40 chess games – simultaneously. The West Wales Chess League was founded on the 12th October 1932 so the exhibition will be coinciding almost exactly with the League’s 80th anniversary.
Ian Jones, the organiser, has already lined up about 30 opponents for Richard but is still looking for a few more; so if you fancy your chances come along on the night and step forward. You do not need to be a member of the League and young players are particularly welcome. Ian hopes to have some prizes available for those youngsters who do particularly well.
If you don’t fancy your chances well just come along and watch the fun. The more the merrier.
The event is taking place at the Ford Club on Llangyfelach Road (Morriston Chess Club’s home venue) and will be running from about 7pm till 10pm. Any games not finished by then will be adjudicated.
For those unfamiliar with simultaneous exhibitions the arrangements usually follow a set pattern. The boards will be arranged in a square so that Richard can move from board to board in order. He will have white on all boards and as he arrives at each board his opponent is expected to make his or her move. Richard will then make his move and go onto the next board leaving his opponent time to think before he comes full circle again. Clocks are not used. It is normal etiquette for opponents to resign when their position becomes absolutely hopeless.
