Wrexham’s 2nd team made a winning start to the season with a 3 ½ to 1 ½ away victory against Holywell.
Newly promoted to Division 2 the Wrexham were keen to continue their winning streak from last season and on paper had a marginally stronger team; however, they knew not to underestimate their opponents.
Top board Ray Holland’s game soon petered out into a draw, but then Wrexham seized the initiative when Oliver Jones managed to checkmate his opponent despite being a piece down. Captain Peter Fisher increased Wrexham’s lead shortly afterwards with victory on board 3 and when Gary Slegg managed to rescue a draw from a lost position Wrexham was assured of the full point. Brian Davies’ game was also drawn meaning that Wrexham did not lose a game.
Peter Fisher said “It’s nice to start off the season with a victory against a strong and experienced side like Holywell. We were perhaps a bit lucky as a couple of the games could have gone against us, but it shows the tenacity of our players if we can score points from inferior positions.”
Spokesperson Mike Hughes added “It’s good that our second team have got of to such an impressive start and we wish them luck for the rest of the season. We very keen to attract new members to the club to ensure that we can field full strength teams in out coming fixtures. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the club they should come along on a Tuesday evening after 7pm. We meet in the New Memorial Hall in Gresford. Alternatively they are welcome to contact me for information about the club.”
