Wrexham Club News - February 2012

It’s been another successful month for the two Wrexham teams in the Chester and District Chess League.

The second team played away to Chester 6 on the 20th, who are second in division 3, one place behind Wrexham. Early losses on two of the boards put Wrexham on the back foot; however, victory by Ray Holland meant the result of the match depended on Oliver Jones who was making his debut for Wrexham. Oliver held his nerve and scored an impressive victory over his experienced opponent meaning the match was a 2 – 2 draw.

The following day saw Wrexham’s first team take on Buckley & Mold in Division 1. Earlier in the season Wrexham had narrowly lost their away game to this team and so were hoping for revenge. Wrexham took a 2-1 lead with wins by Ray Holland and Peter Fisher but the Buckley & Mold top boards put up determined resistance.  It was only in the 15 minute allegro finish that David James and Richard Dineley were able to break through handing Wrexham a 4 – 1 victory.

Peter Fisher wins again

Spokesperson Mike Hughes said “The comprehensive victory over Buckley & Mold by the first team means that there is still an outside chance that we will be able to retain our title. A draw for the second team against Chester 6 was a good result as we are on pole position to win promotion to the second division next season. This would be a great opportunity for anyone who is thinking of playing chess competitively to come along to the club and give it a go.” Further details can be obtained from Mikes Hughes on 01978 854676 or mike.gm.hughes@btinternet.com.
