RICHARD E. JONES 1947-2011
Richard, or Rej as he was affectionately known, was born on the 14th October 1947, and attended St Albans and Thames Valley Grammar School from 1960. He studied English at Swansea University from 1968. Later on he was an English teacher at three schools in the Swansea area - Townhill, Dillwyn Llewellyn and then at Birchgrove Comprehensive until his retirement.
Rej initially played for Swansea in the West Wales League, and later on for Bishop Vaughan. Then in 1994 he founded the Swansea Valley club, and ran it practically single-handed until its demise in 2010. He held various posts in the local league, including EJ Clarke organiser and Division One controller, but his main contribution was as Grading and Publicity Officer from 1991 to 2008. He started the very successful South Wales Evening Post column, which is still running today. As grading officer he issued a spreadsheet of results to each player showing how their rating had been calculated, which anticipated the live rating system. Rej was also Chairman of the West Glamorgan Schools Chess League from 1980.
Rej also held posts in the Welsh Chess Union, including Grading and Media. He was President of the Welsh Chess Union for the past two years.
Outside chess, Rej had many enjoyments including Music, Art, Birdwatching and Walking but his passion was Literature, especially Poetry. Whilst teaching and especially after retirement he wrote many verses and set up a website full of his own publications called “A Fistful of Poetry”. You can visit this online at http://www.fistfulofpoetry.com/.
Rej leaves his wife, Kath, daughter Sally, and son Richard.
He will be greatly missed.
