Nigel Short visited South Wales last weekend and entertained an appreciative audience at the Mackintosh Club in Cardiff. He gave a highly educational demonstration of how to use the Queens Gambit Declined as a winning defence for Black against Grandmasters illustrated by playing through a smashing win of his against Keith Arkell from a recent British Championship. After that CJ further entertained us with a less high-brow but still spectacular mating attack of his own before a relaxed and informative Q&A session.
After lunch we moved on to the day's main event as Nigel took on 19 players in a Simultaneous exhibition winning 16, drawing 2 (Tom Brown and myself) and losing just one to Charles Summers. It should be pointed out that on Nigel's current UK tour he has so far played around 250 games and this was his first defeat !
