Hugo Fowler came joint-first in the intermediate section of the Frome Congress. Taking a bye in the first round, he won four games on the trot to come joint-first on 4.5/5. His wins gave him a tournament rating of 175, way above his current grade of 122. Further success for Welsh players came in the Open, where Tim Kett and WFM Jane Richmond shared joint second with Matthew Payne from England.
May has been a great month for Welsh chess in the Fowler household: at the Somerset mega-final, Hugo won the supremo title with 6/6 in the under 14s, while younger brother Caspian was crowned Supremo in the under 12s with 5.5./6.
