All junior players are strongly encouraged to participate in the Welsh Junior Championships held later this term. In age groups from under 8s through to under 11s, running in parallel to the competitions for those that have qualified for the top-flight section, there are competitions for identical age groups for those that have not qualified – these are referred to as the “Majors”. Note that for ages under 12s and above, no qualification is involved.
Closer to Easter, there are events for county teams at under 9, under 11 and under 14 (for example, teams from Gwent and Glamorgan will play in the South Wales and West of England Jamboree on Sunday 28 February). Teams will draw on players participating in both tiers of the age group championships – this means that a strong result in the “Majors” would give a player a great chance of representing their county.
At the Quadrangular tournament held in Liverpool on 5-6 December 2015, the Welsh under 12 team put in an incredibly strong performance, taking this title by netting 23.5 points out of a possible 30.
Individual results for this team of ten that played rounds against Scotland, the North of England, and the Midlands, were: Chirag Guha (2), Ifan Rathbone-Jones (2.5), Anton Petkov (2), Susanna Fraser (3), Duncan MacDonald (2), Caspian Fowler (2.5), Hiya Ray (3), Emily Wang (1.5), Robert Goodwin (2) and David McIntosh (3).
In this section Scotland came second with 14 points, the North third with 11/5 points and the Midlands fourth with 11 points.
A team-of-six from The Dell, Chepstow, emerged victorious in a very closely fought semi-final of the ECF Under 11 Open at Magdalene College School, Oxford, on Sunday 6 December.
In this five round competition, The Dell started strongly with a 6-0 win over the B-team from Magdalene College School. The next three rounds were very competitive, with a narrow win against Laxton A, a 4-2 loss to Aldro, and a draw with Magdalene College School A. This left The Dell in third place going into the final round, 2.5 points behind Laxton A and 2 points behind Aldro. Paired against Laxton B, The Dell finished with a 6-0 win, and thanks to a win by Magdalene College School A over Laxton and Aldro only picking up 3.5 points against a very strong side made up of reserves, The Dell came first by just half a point.
The final qualifier for the 2016 Welsh Junior Championships was held at St John’s on Saturday 28 November. The results were as follows:
