All secondary schools in Caerphilly County Borough are invited to send a player from each of Y7 to Y11 to compete in this event. The event was being held for the seventh time but this was the first time they had gone to the new library in the centre of Caerphilly, which opened last January and which is hoping next year to start an after school club involving chess.
This year three schools sent pupils to compete – St Cenydd Comprehensive School, Lewis School,Pengam and Blackwood Comprehensive School. After a morning of hard fought battles, each school was able to claim a winner, and a trophy to take away with them:-
Y7 Ieuan Halls St Cenydd
Y8 Owen Matthews Blackwood
Y9 Sam Jones Lewis School, Pengam
Y10 Owain Price Blackwood
Y11 Jordan Betts Lewis School, Pengam
Even the teachers were somewhat taken aback by the level of concentration throughout the whole morning which the pupils put into their efforts to be successful, and as well as the trophies for the winners, each pupil was given a certificate to recognise their achievement in being chosen to represent their school.
