John Thornton’s annual simultaneous display at Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili was later than usual this year, which gave the opportunity for some of the new players from Year 3 and 4 to take part. The school finished as top Welsh language school at the recent Cardiff City event, and some of the players at that event also gave a good account of themselves here.
John won all 30 games, but Oliver Scarfe (Y6) played very sensibly and won the prize for last person to finish while Gwen Phillips (Y4) – currently amongst the top 10 in the Welsh Girls’ list for her age - won the prize for the best game. Alwena Davies-Matthews (Y6) whose dad’s company - White Sky Solutions - has recently designed a website for the Caerphilly club also pushed John hard. Alwena is currently the fourth-placed girl in the Welsh Y6 rating list. Lewis Jones (Y4) who comes regularly to Caerphilly Junior club (Mondays 6:30-7:30) also played well showing that some of what he has picked up there has had a beneficial effect on his game.
All the children enjoyed the challenge and an afternoon away from lessons!!
