Howell’s Girls Win National Chess Team Competition

Five Howell’s Junior School girls took part in the UK and Ireland Girls’ Chess Championships 2013 at Hinchley Wood, Surrey, on 22nd June.

In the youngest section, Under 7, Nayana Kalavala took second place. At Under 8 Venetia Sivarajasingam came second and Susanna Fraser third. At Under 10 Shayanna Sivarajasingam came second while in the Under 11 section Ritika Knot scored 7 points. So well done all round! The best news was still to come: the scores of the top five players from each school were totted up to see who would win the highly coveted School Trophy. The winner was Howell’s!

Coach Mr. Kevin Thomas said: “This really is a fantastic result – to be the top school in Britain for girls’ chess underlines the huge amount of work that these players have put in. It is also a great tribute to the parents who are prepared to give up weekends and drive them to these venues. Our chess year ends with this huge achievement.”
