Welsh Junior Girls’ Championships 2011

Under 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12

Hosted by Inglefield House – Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls Junior Department - this important chess event once again recorded a high number of entries: forty five from around the country.

At U8 Neya Govindaraj of Howell’s & Aishwarya Lutchman-Singh of the Cathedral School came 1st=, with Emily Wang of Howell’s in 3rd.

The U9 event was won by a determined Stephanie du Toit of Inglefield House[one of only two who won all her games] with Shahana Yusuf of Howell’s in 2nd & Olivia Latheron [Inglefield] sharing 3rd place with Shermin Riaz & Shayanna Sivarajasingham of Howell’s.

The U10 title went to Anna-Lena Barth of Rougemont School, with Eve Farrow of St.Paul’s Church in Wales Grangetown in 2nd. In joint third were Saskis Stokes of St.Paul’s, Akanshka Saxena of Howell’s, Katherine Finch of Inglefield & Vindhya Maripuri of Rougemont.

At U11 the question was: which Howell’s girl would come first? In a tense & closely fought 4th round game Nudhara Yusuf came out on top – to be crowned Welsh Champion – with Alyssa Wang 2nd. In 3rd place were Cleo Fish & Megan Richards of St.Paul’s Grangetown.

At U12 Gabrielle du Toit of Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls & Lauryn Sheppard of St.Paul’s shared the trophy.

Congratulations to everyone who took part. There was much praise for the venue from the visiting players & parents, & a special thank you to John Thornton, who as Arbiter was the epitome of patience & diplomacy.
