North Wales Junior Rapid Play Championships 2013

February 9th

The North Wales Junior Rapidplay Championships took place at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay.  A total of forty-nine players entered from across North Wales, as far west as Bangor and as far east as Deeside. The tournament was organised by Syringa and Andrew Camp and the tournament controller was Peter Purland, the chief arbiter for Wales.

There were three tournaments in all; an under 18 event, an under 11 event and an under 9 event. Trophies and titles were given to the champions of every age group within each tournament, with medals for runners-up and certificates for all participants.

This was the most well-attended competition with thirty-one entrants in total. The Under 9 section was a fierce battle throughout between Ali Al-Rawi and Ifan Rathbone-Jones and it was no surprise when they had to play each other in the final round. Ifan came out on top after a terrific battle to take first prize with Ali taking a well-deserved second place. Third place went to Anton Petkov who also had a superb tournament.

The Under 8 first prize went to Tyler Havvas on 4.5 points out of 6 who just pipped his fellow school mates, Finn Aierstock and Benjamin Farley who finished a point behind.

Amrit Bolina continued his run of good form by taking the Under 7 prize ahead of close rival, Jonathon Osbourne. Viktor Frydrych, in his first ever tournament performed admirably to take third prize

Tournament C: Under 11, Under 10

Under 11 Winners

1st Prize: Petko Petkov – Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School
2nd Prize: Abhishek Bathula
– Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School
3rd Prize: Kathleen Cheesley – Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School

Under 10 Winners

1st Prize: Arjan Bolina – Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School
2nd Prize: Macey Taylor
– Sandycroft School
3rd Prize: Harri Jackson
– Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School

The Under 11 tournament was a hotly contested affair between Petko Petkov and Abhishek Bathula. Petko was leading the way up until Round 5 when a sudden loss meant Abhishek was able to overtake him into first place. However, fortunes once again reversed in the final round giving Petko his first ever tournament win. Kathleen Cheesley, also playing her first ever event can be proud of her performance and medal.

The Under 10 tournament saw two of the finest players of this age group in Wales battling it out and indeed they were inseparable throughout. Arjan Bolina and Macey Taylor drew against each other and won all their other games meaning they had to face each other again in a sudden-death Armageddon play-off. Macey won the toss and bravely selected the White pieces meaning she had to win the play-off to secure the trophy whereas Arjan only had to draw, albeit with one minute less on his clock at the start. Arjan prevailed though with a brutal attack and secured the win and the trophy. Macey though can be proud of her outstanding performance as it is one that should attract attention from the Welsh Junior Team Selectors. A special mention must also go to Harri Jackson who performed admirably to secure third place.

3rd Prize: Niamh McCormack – Howell’s School

Tournament A/B was more sparsely attended than the others but the standard of play and competitive spirit did not suffer for that. Robert Warrington was able to just pip Ho-Wing Ma to first prize but the gap between these two fine players is closing all the time. Joe Gardiner from Eirias High School played some excellent chess during the day and was even quoted as saying he enjoyed the games he lost as they all taught him something. Gokul Parameswaran from Bangor also showed plenty of talent in winning the Under 13 section while Welsh International, Imogen Camp scored 100% in the tournament to win the Under 12 event. Amy Goode, who only learned how to play the game a few weeks ago took second place and Niamh McCormack from Denbigh played with some style to secure third place.

It was generally felt that the entire event had been a great success and an excellent way for the newly formed North Wales Junior Chess Association to make it appearance on the Welsh Chess Scene. The organisers wish to thank all players and parents for attending, Rydal Penrhos School for hosting the event and all those who helped in any way. The North Wales Junior Chess Association will be holding more events in the near future.
