Under 14's success at National Youth Chess Association Champs

They say success breeds success. This certainly seems to be the case in the under 14 age group.

Following the Welsh under 14’s win in the John Robinson Cup at Daventry in July, the South Wales Under 14 team travelled to Northampton on 23rd September for the National Association Championships.

The team of 12 went into the tournament with high hopes but, at the end of the first round, found themselves in equal second place with Kent, one point behind Sussex.

In round two fortunes changed with the South Wales youngsters finishing this round one point ahead.

After a tense third and final round the team won the Championship.

This is the first time South Wales has won the under 14 Championship, or indeed any of the age groups outright. Many tears ago South Wales tied for 1st place in the under 16 Championship.

There must be something in the air in this part of GB – after all, Northampton isn’t far from Daventry, is it?
