Go Wales !

(I see a Welsh-player challenge coming on - which Welsh team can show off the biggest flag ! - competition for Alex ? )

A fantastic effort from Ashley and Megan in one of the strongest international junior events. Played over 13 rounds, even though it was one game a day and also included a rest day, it was an intense and exhausting event but they both enjoyed themselves and made the most of it.

Ashley played six players over 2100 so great experience, and finished on 4 points. His aim was 2 points but I am sure he will be kicking himseld he didn't get at least another 2 in the bag. Hopefullly he will put a few comments by his games for us.

Meg's target was five results from the thirteen games. She was really pleased she was able to get 3 wins and 3 draws, and unfortunately got the bye in the last round.  Her tournament grade was 1971, gaining 30 fide points. She will hopefully enter the event again so has a score to improve on ;-)

More comments from Meg also and a collection of photos will be available shortly.

Congratulations to the winners GM Alexander Ipatov from Turkey who scored 10/13 in the Open and WGM Qi Guo from China achieving 9.5/13 points in the girls.

Meg decided to play one of her new openings and although she had an advantage in the middlegame, couldn't convert it without creating weakness.

Comments:

Meg said she felt much better than yesterday and managed a 5 1/2 hour game ! The prep went well with Lawrence Cooper her coach, and she got into a winning position, but tried too hard to win and lost the advantage, it ended in a complicated endgame and then she got into time trouble.

Comments:

Ashley was really pleased to have got a win today, he is the Top U20 Welsh player but this is his first international appearance for Wales so he couldn't have a tougher junior debut tournament.

Meg was not well today from the heat and dehydration, she said she didn't play 'normal' as she couldn't concentrate : ( she couldn't wait for the air-con on full blast in her room afterwards.

Meg played some creative chess to get into a good position sadly swapping off to a drawn ending due to time-issues and missed a win >: /

Players Comments:

Ashleys oppponent played an opening he didn't know and so he sacrificed to get play but things didn't improve.

Meg said her game was complicated all the way through, but she powered on until the end to get a perpetual draw.
