Chess in a Caerphilly School has flourished over the last few months with Harry Boobyer from Y4 taking part in the Southern Gigafinal of the Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge in Derby this weekend. We wish him well!
This week as part of the School's Maths week, John Thornton from Caerphilly Chess Club went into the school for 3 half-hour sessions with Y2 pupils to introduce them to the game. Over 40 enthusiastic pupils took part in the lessons, with a number of the Y4, Y5 and Y6 pupils helping John to get the younger players familiar with the board and pieces and playing 'Pawn Games'. Hopefully there will be some good players to emerge from Y3 in the school next year.
The school's KO tournament was won by Kyle Huish Y4 who is now attending Caerphilly Chess club along with his brother. Kyle, and the other 3 semi-finalists, Leo, Gwen and Harry will all receive trophies in the end of term assembly. The school is also hoping to stage a simultaneous display by John during the last week of term - weather permitting!! - they are hoping their sports day hasn't got to be delayed until that day.
