Two Gwent schools play in ECF Under 11 Open finals

At the ECF Under 11 Open finals played at Uppingham school on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July, two of the ten participating schools came from Gwent: The Dell and The Grange.

In this teams-of-six, five round competition determined by game points The Dell came fifth with 16 out of 30. Their first day started with a 5-1 loss to Kings College, Wimbledon, but the team bounced back with 6-0 wins against St Edwards School, Leek, and Twickenham Prep School. This put The Dell in second place overnight.

On Friday The Dell began with a game against The Hall. Coached by GM Jonathan Hawkins, The Hall, crowned EPSCA Under 11 champions earlier in the week, were a formidable side with an average ECF rapidplay grade of more than 110. The Dell lost 6-0 and were paired for the final round against St Paul’s Primary. They drew 3-3.

In the qualifying semi-finals back in the autumn of 2015, The Grange’s B team beat the A-team. This led to a relatively inexperienced team playing in the finals. They competed well, scoring 10.5 game points and finishing ninth.

During the prize-giving, Anna Boyle of The Dell was awarded a share of the best-game prize.
