Several Welsh junior teams were in action during the week-end 4-5 June, including a girls under 11 team-of-eight that beat their English counterparts 9.5 – 6.5. The other win, also on Sunday, came from the Under 12s, which beat the South West 15.5 – 8.5. The Under 12s almost pulled off a remarkable victory on Saturday. Trailing 4-8 after round 1, they bounced back to win the second round 7.5 – 4.5.
For the 2016/2017 season, the East Glamorgan Minor League will take on a new structure, with teams divided into two divisions and all games played on Mondays at St John's, Cardiff. The age limit on players will be lifted to 18, and a rapidplay grading limit of less than 1150 will be introduced for players in division two. Individuals and teams interested in participating in the league should contact Kam Chooyin. Details for the league, including contact information, can be found at http://www.egca.org.uk/
The winners of the league for the 2015/2016 season were The Dell, Chepstow. This team is incredibly grateful to St John's, Cardiff, for providing a venue for their home matches.
Hugo Fowler came joint-first in the intermediate section of the Frome Congress. Taking a bye in the first round, he won four games on the trot to come joint-first on 4.5/5. His wins gave him a tournament rating of 175, way above his current grade of 122. Further success for Welsh players came in the Open, where Tim Kett and WFM Jane Richmond shared joint second with Matthew Payne from England.
At the EPSCA semi-finals held at Bristol Grammar school on Saturday 14 May, The Dell’s Under 9 team won a bronze award, while the Under 11s netted a silver.
